Provence Beam Dining Table

Provence Beam Dining Table

When Hurricane Dorian left much of downtown Charleston covered in fallen trees, Capers Cauthen and his two carpenters took to the streets, rescuing trunks of pecan and cherry trees from the wood chippers for a much more beautiful future: as tables made from Cauthen's studio, Landrum Tables. Located in North Charleston, this native son has made a name crafting one-of-a-kind furniture with a distinct, organic feel.

Twelve years ago, after a series of unlucky events including an injury and losing a job, Cauthen got a call that his grandmother's barn had fallen down. He rescued the wood from the building and made his first table—and it sold quickly.

Since then, Cauthen has made a business creating one-of-a-kind furniture from reclaimed wood—of which there's plenty in his hometown/ Plus, the town is full of historic houses and currently in the midst of a renovating frenzy. "I get all the antique wood from homes that have been renovated—some for good, some not for good, but they almost always throw the beautiful wood away," he says. Cauthen happily scoops up the hundreds-year old beams.

This appreciation for history is in Cauthen's blood, so to speak: "My father, Henry Cauthen was a Director of the Preservation Society in Charleston," he says. "He took time to show us as children, 'You need to pay attention to that, it's a Greek revival home, it's made out of this wood,' and just to instill the importance of architecture and the wood and the construction into us as young kids."

While Cauthen recalls that, at the time, "We're like, 'Okay, can we go surfing now?' We kind of dismissed it," such lessons came back to buoy his business years later: Eventually, father and son would open an antique store on Charleston's King Street, where, Cauthen recalls, "We spent our time going to estate sales, garage sales, and antique shows all over the country. I had a lot of exposure to furniture, but there were always these tables I liked and I couldn't ever find." Eventually, he says, "I kind of took all the different realms of furniture and presented them into this long, narrow table with several low shelves."

When he started putting them in the antiques shop, Cauthen recalls, "people would walk in and buy my table and not even look at the antiques. I thought 'Ah, man, I need to make another table.' So that's how it kind of started."

Since then, Cauthen has developed a devoted following not only in Charleston, where a "buy local" mentality runs deep, but all over the world. "I love seeing how people use the designs in their own way," says the designer.

Since his business has grown, Cauthen has brought on a team of carpenters that are indicative of the strong resurgence of craft in the South Carolina city. "My lead carpenter is somebody who came in here with an open mind and I showed him what I wanted, and then he just took off," says Cauthen. "He has become a great craftsman."

After all, he muses, "it takes a special individual to dig into a woodpile and learn how to create a table out of it."
